I live in the Republic of Panama, it gives you a healthy respect for language barriers.
Myself and many of my friends all ran out and read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo and its subsequent books The Girl Who Played with Fire and The Girl Who Kicked the Hornets Nest. I want to say outright they are fabulous, gritty and moving. I loved them. When I first heard they would be made into movies I went to the internet and looked them up on IMDB, like every other Fan. But instead of finding the American version I came across a Swedish version.
My reaction, WOW. It stars Noomi Rapace and Michael Nyqvist both bring these two characters to life in a realistic and provocative way. But to my surprise and joy, not one but all three of the Millennium trilogy had been made into movies, with English voice-overs and subtitles (Yea). I quickly binge-watched all three, stopping only long enough to care for my family.
But back to the focus of this post, translations. Later the American version came out and I watched it with great disappointment. The British and American actors simply did not have enough of an understanding of the culture to properly portray this roller coaster of a thriller.
